Privacy Policy

DRAFT — pending attorney review. This document describes how Grandkins actually works today.
What we collect
- Account data: names, emails, phone/WhatsApp numbers, languages,
and dates of birth you add for family members.
- Call data: with everyone's consent — transcripts, live captions
and their translations, moments a family member chooses to save, and
voice/text messages, stored in your family's private archive. Calls are
not continuously recorded.
- Consent records: what was shown, in which language, which text
version, when, and from which IP — kept as legal evidence.
- Usage/billing: call durations, AI cost metering, subscription
status (payment cards are handled by Stripe, never by us).
How translation works
Captions are sent to Google's Gemini API for translation and to
Microsoft's speech service for the optional spoken interpreter voice. These
providers process the text to provide the service. We never sell data or
use it for advertising. No analytics or ad SDKs exist in the apps.
What we never do
- No voiceprints or biometric identifiers (spoken translation uses the
same neutral voices for every family).
- No selling or sharing family data. Your conversations are visible only
to your family account.
- Platform administrators see operational metadata (counts, plans, spend)
— never recordings, transcripts, or captions.
Children
Children under 13 are added only by a parent with a fresh password
confirmation and explicit consent (COPPA). Children never have their own
credentials.
Your rights
- Export: Settings → Privacy → "Export my data" downloads
everything we hold about your family.
- Delete: Settings → Privacy → typed confirmation deletes the
whole family after a 7-day grace period — rows and files.
- India DPDP: the join-screen notice grandparents accept is the
purpose-limited notice for processing in India.
Security
TLS everywhere, hashed passwords (scrypt), one-time expiring join links
(stored only as hashes), consent-gated recording enforced server-side, and
nightly backups.
